Week 21 recap: Pushing towards the playoffs in the 18U division

HACKENSACK, N.J. — With the playoffs mere weeks away, every team in the 18U division is bringing their A-game to try and earn a spot. In the 18U division, that competitiveness led to some terrific games.

North Jersey Avalanche vs. New Jersey Jr. Titans (Elite)

The fifth-place Avalanche were just two games out of the playoff picture, but they’re in desperate need of wins to squeeze in. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t get a win nor a loss this weekend. They battled to a 1-1 overtime draw against the third place New Jersey Jr. Titans, who were doubtless happy with the result as they only need to hold serve to guarantee a playoff spot. If anything, the Avalanche proved that they are a solid hockey team who can compete against any of the top teams in the division, but with this many talented teams, it still might not be good enough for a playoff berth.

Philadelphia Little Flyers vs. Long Island Royals (Elite)

The Long Island Royals were not in danger of losing the number one seed, but they were certainly in danger of losing some precious momentum, as they fell to the fourth place Philadelphia Little Flyers in a shocking upset. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Flyers rattled off two goals in the second and three goals in the third to pull ahead, 5-4. This huge win will likely help the Flyers secure fourth place in the division, and consequently, a playoff berth.

Philadelphia Hockey Club vs. New Jersey Devils Youth (Elite)

The season may be over for both of these teams, but the Philadelphia Hockey Club still got to enjoy a big win in their regular season finale. They scored six unanswered goals with six different players while their defense pitched a shutout. It won’t be enough to propel them to the playoffs, but perhaps they can start to build on this win as they continue their hockey careers going forward.
